Open Access Week 2017

When: October 23-39 2017

What: Open Access is the freely immediate online availability of research articles coupled with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment. Open Access Explained

Theme: This year's theme is an invitation to answer the question of what concrete benefits can be realized by making scholarly outputs openly available. "Open in order to…" serves as a prompt to move beyond talking about openness in itself and focus on what openness enables - in an individual discipline, at a particular institution, or in a specific context; then to take action to realize these benefits.
Open in order to increase the impact of my scholarship. Open in order to enable more equitable participation in research. Open in order to improve public health. These are just a few examples of how this question can be answered.

How does Dykes Library support OA? KU's One University Open Access (OA) Author Fund is designed to heighten the visibility and accessibility of the University's scholarship.
Additionally, publication consultations through the Research and Learning Department and through the One University OA Fund team are available for researchers to identify high-quality open access journals to publish within and to navigate questions of copyright and authors' rights.

Catalog Upgrade August 11-14, 2015

The server maintenance is now complete (Monday, August 14th at 8am) and everything should be operating as normal again.

Beginning Friday evening and extending through end of day on Monday, Library systems will be upgraded, impacting catalog searches, request processes, and check out and renewal of library materials.

The following services will remain available for most of the upgrade; however, there may be periods when these services are not available – watch for further announcements:
  • Library website (library.kumc.edu)
  • Search the catalog …to search for journals and books
  • E-Journals
  • Databases
  • Request Materials (ILLiad) … to get Articles, Books, More
Patrons will still be able to use the Search box on the library home page to search both electronic and print holdings. However, print titles searched and accessed may not display accurate availability, location or call number. Electronic journal content can still be searched and accessed via the E-Journal Finder and Citation Linker (http://mt8fd2he2v.search.serialssolutions.com/).

We apologize for any inconvenience

Catalog Maintenance

The Library Catalog will be undergoing maintenance beginning Friday May 26 through Monday May 29. During this time, electronic books and journals may not show up in the journal and book search results.

Access to our eBooks will be available for the duration by going directly to either AccessMedicine or ClinicalKey depending on where the book is published. This maintenance will not affect the E-journal Finder, Database List, Request Materials (ILLiad), or our Find It! button.

Once the work is complete, all of our electronic resources will appear in the catalog again.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Update on Student Printing

As of June 1, printing at Dykes Library has a capped amount per student. Based on the spring 2017 semester, the quota will impact fewer than 100 students and was arrived at jointly with the Student Government Council.

Here are the details:
  • $20 will be added to each student's printing account per spring and summer/fall semesters. This works out to be 670 pages of black/white at $.03 per page or 80 pages of color at $.26.
  • Students needing more than $20 worth of printing will be able to pay by credit card at the library User Services desk. Amounts will be reset at the start of each semester regardless of balance.
  • The printers will have a new 'tap-n-go' service that will not release the print job until you tap your badge to it. This will reduce unclaimed print jobs and provide security for sensitive documents.
  • Students will be able to print directly from their own devices after they install Papercut.
Why is this being done?

Dykes Library was an early partner with KUMC's recycling efforts and shares a commitment to a green, clean, and sustainable medical center. As the library and SGC work together to reduce waste, our goal is to ensure that all students have what they need to succeed. The library must focus its limited resources on needed journal and database collections and research collaborations in the classroom and individuals.
