New PubMed

After years of careful planning, the National Library of Medicine has rolled out a new version of the PubMed health sciences research website.

If you use PubMed frequently, you likely have already encountered this website. It will become the default for KUMC this May, replacing the legacy version.

In addition to the modern interface and mobile-friendly design, new features include:

• Powerful new search engine facilitates rapid retrieval of combined search terms
• (‘ gene therapy nejm 2019’ retrieves articles published in New England Journal of Medicine in 2019 on gene therapy)

• New search algorithm improves coverage of keyword synonyms and MeSH term mapping in basic search
• (‘pancreas cancer’ also retrieves articles using other terminology, such as pancreatic cancer, pancreatic neoplasms) 

• New and improved features in search results display
• ( Advanced search, abstract snippets, downloadable search history, citing features in APA, MLA etc.) 

New PubMed simplifies exporting search results lists into a citation manager such as Endnote, and the new PubMed file format allows you to save more complete information about each citation you download.

Other popular features, including the MeSH database, search filters, My NCBI, and citation sharing are still available, but may be moved to a new location within the site.

  

Access to full-text content from Dykes Library will continue to be integrated into PubMed. Drag this PubMed link into your bookmarks toolbar to access content only available remotely after KUMC web authentication.

We are developing trainings and resources for you to use, and the National Library of Medicine has created excellent training content as well.

You may continue to use the legacy version of PubMed for now, but links will start automatically redirecting to the new PubMed in the next few months and the legacy version will eventually be discontinued.

PubMed lookup service temporarily unavailable

The PubMed ID (PMID) lookup service is temporarily unavailable. Because of this, our FindIt! button is unable to use PMIDs to connect to the full text of articles. When this happens, you will be redirected to our Citation Linker page where you can still use information other than the PMID such as journal title, ISSN, volume, issue, or DOI to find if an individual article is available in our collection.

Workaround in PubMed

If the citation displays a DOI link or publisher link you may click either of these and it may connect to the full text. This will work if we have access to the content and you are on campus or have already authenticated to our proxy server as described on our Remote Access Guide.

PubMed lookup service temporarily unavailable

The error message in Citation Linker that reads "Please include a Journal, ISSN, DOI, or PMID. The PubMed lookup service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later." is being caused by an issue with PubMed.

PubMed has been notified and is working on fixing this error. In the meantime, you can click the "Look Up" button until you are redirected to our Find it! page or search directly from our website: http://library.kumc.edu/.

New FindIt! from PubMed mobile bookmarklet for iPhone and mobile users

Do you long for the little blue FindIt! icon for full-text when using PubMed's mobile site^[1] on your iPhone or mobile device? Add our experimental bookmarklet to your device's bookmarks.

1. Long-press (right-click) this link and save it to your bookmarks:
   KUMC PubMed FindIt!
2. When you find yourself on a page like http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/24862208 just click the bookmarklet to search the PMID with KUMC Libraries' FindIt!

Drag it to your desktop browser's bookmarks, too! It works on standard non-mobile PubMed URLs like http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24862208.
