Are you researching drug therapies or medical devices? Try using Embase, a database that indexes the latest research from 8,100 journals, 11,500 conferences, and several pre-print services.

 Use Embase if you are looking for:

• Clinical evaluations of  pharmaceuticals or medical devices
• Conference abstracts dating back to 2009
• Supplemental results to your PubMed search, especially for a systematic review

• Take advantage of the special search forms that guide you in creating an effective search:

• PICO – uses the Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome framework to guide your search construction
• PV Wizard – for pharmaceutical vigilance searches. This is especially helpful to search for adverse drug reactions
• Medical device – helps find information about devices in clinical trials, adverse device effects, or device economic information
• Drug – The Drug Search form includes specific filters for drug behavior and route of administration
• Disease – The Disease Search form includes disease search subheadings

What content is included?

• Over 37 million records including 3.6 million conference abstracts (Embase content)
• Over 2900 journals not indexed by Medline
• Content is indexed using Emtree subject headings, with over 86,000 preferred terms including 33,000 for drugs and chemicals and over 5,500 for medical devices

Find It! Service Outage

The Dykes Library Find It! service and the E-Journal Finder will not be available starting Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 10am for up to 12 hours while our vendor performs system maintenance.

Databases such as ClinicalKey, Access Medicine, and UpToDate will be unaffected. Similarly, you will be able to access full text links in other databases such as CINAHL or GoogleScholar if the content is linked to directly. To access these databases you may browse our databases list.

Please try the following workarounds to access articles. Be aware that these may not work in all situations.

Student Appreciation at A. R. Dykes Library

Every year A.R. Dykes Library of the Health Sciences contributes a few questions to the KUMC Annual Student Survey, and we always appreciate the students’ comments.  As we start the Fall, 2021 semester, we want to share some of our resources and services that were mentioned in recent surveys. Web of Science Update

Web of Science has a new interface and some additional features. Their Getting Started video (4min) provides a helpful overview.

Highlights:

Author Beamplots present a new way to view researchers’ scholarly output.

The URLs of article citation information can be copied and shared. For your link to work off-campus you will need to use our proxy generator to add our proxy prefix.

Sharable query links allow you to easily share your search strategy with your collaborators.

You can still access the legacy version if desired.

Find It! Service Outage

Ovid MEDLINE Link Update

The Ovid MEDLINE link on our database list will now take you directly to the Advanced Search tab for the Ovid MEDLINE database with all MEDLINE content from 1946 – present. 

The Map Term to Subject Heading box is selected by default to help you utilize the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms used to index the articles in this database. You can view Ovid video training on Subject mapping (4:32 min) for more assistance.

If you would like to select one of the other Ovid MEDLINE sections, click the Change link to open the selection dialogue box.

SciFinder Update

An updated version of SciFinder is now available and you can access it via our database page.

Access to SciFinder or SciFinderⁿ requires a registered account; if you already have an account with SciFinder, you can continue to use your same credentials to log in to SciFinderⁿ. Otherwise, you will need to create an account for access.

 You can view the new training materials on the SciFinderⁿ support site, including the ones highlighted below.

• Synthesis planning (3min 30sec)
• SciFinderⁿ will suggest potential synthesis of target compounds using the CAS reaction collections.
• Quicker patent review (5min 24sec)
• SciFinderⁿ includes PatentPak, an annotated database that allows you to immediately view the content in the full-text of patents related to your search.
• Simplified searching (28min 41sec)
• The new All-Search function will return relevant substances, reactions, literature references, and suppliers related to your query.
• Our FindIt! @ KUMC link can be found in the Full Text dropdown in SciFinderⁿ.

The A.R. Dykes Library is complying with the University’s guidance regarding the novel coronavirus, "COVID-19" and is now open to the KUMC community. At this time, we are unable to welcome public guests.

Hours
The Library building is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 am until 6:00 pm and KUMC badges are required to enter. Remote services are available to continue providing information and access to faculty, staff and students even when our doors may be closed. See below for more information.

Study Rooms
Study rooms are available for use on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Online Reference Services
Chat service is available Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am until 10:00 pm and on Sunday from 8:00 am until 11:00 pm. The Chat link appears on the right-hand side of the Library homepage. You may also email the User Services staff with questions.

Research Consultations with Librarians
Schedule a virtual appointment with a research librarian or send a request for a comprehensive search.

Accessing Library Resources
KUMC students, faculty, and staff wishing to use our services and resources may do so remotely. All electronic resources, such as videos, books, and journals will continue to be available through the Dykes Library website 24/7. This guide gives you tips on how to access our electronic resources remotely. If you are having access issues please contact us immediately.

Request Materials
We are providing limited interlibrary loan services to the KUMC community only. Use the Find It! link in databases or on Google Scholar to locate the article in our collection. If we don’t have it, the link provides an option to request it through interlibrary loan, see instructions here. You can also directly Request Materials.

New PubMed

After years of careful planning, the National Library of Medicine has rolled out a new version of the PubMed health sciences research website.

If you use PubMed frequently, you likely have already encountered this website. It will become the default for KUMC this May, replacing the legacy version.

In addition to the modern interface and mobile-friendly design, new features include:

• Powerful new search engine facilitates rapid retrieval of combined search terms
• (‘ gene therapy nejm 2019’ retrieves articles published in New England Journal of Medicine in 2019 on gene therapy)

• New search algorithm improves coverage of keyword synonyms and MeSH term mapping in basic search
• (‘pancreas cancer’ also retrieves articles using other terminology, such as pancreatic cancer, pancreatic neoplasms) 

• New and improved features in search results display
• ( Advanced search, abstract snippets, downloadable search history, citing features in APA, MLA etc.) 

New PubMed simplifies exporting search results lists into a citation manager such as Endnote, and the new PubMed file format allows you to save more complete information about each citation you download.

Other popular features, including the MeSH database, search filters, My NCBI, and citation sharing are still available, but may be moved to a new location within the site.

  

Access to full-text content from Dykes Library will continue to be integrated into PubMed. Drag this PubMed link into your bookmarks toolbar to access content only available remotely after KUMC web authentication.
